Carcassonne Fortress is a medieval architectural ensemble located in the French city of Carcassonne in the Aude department. The fortress stands on the right bank of the river Od to the southeast of the modern city. The history of this fortified medieval city dates back to the Gallo-Roman period of French history. It is surrounded by a double row of fortress walls, the length of which is about 3 km. There are 52 towers above the walls.
