The Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria is a Dominican monastery in the Portuguese city of Batalha (Leria County). Inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The construction of the monastery began in the international Gothic style in 1385 by the vow of King João I in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for the victory over the Castilians in the Battle of Aljubarrota. Six subsequent kings continued the construction of the monastery and found the last rest here, including Duarte I and Prince Henry the Navigator. Construction stopped only in 1517, when the main forces were transferred to the construction of the monastery of the Hieronymites in Belém. In the XIX century, large-scale restoration work was carried out in Batalha, and in 1980 a national museum was opened here.Solid areas: 3%
