Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) is one of the temples in the Rokuon-ji complex in the Kita area of Kyoto, Japan. The pavilion (Syariden) was built in 1397 as a holiday villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, where he spent the last years of his life, losing all interest in the political life of the country. The main shrine of the monastery is the statue of Avalokiteshvara. Valuable monuments include a portrait of shogun Ashikagi Yoshimitsu, frescoes of the Daishō cabinet, and a monastery garden.
