Whitby is a city in the English county of North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Located on the east coast of Britain near the Esk River Delta. It was founded by the Northumbrian king Oswiu in 656, in the IX century it was ravaged by the Vikings, who built a village in its place. It was revived only after the Norman Conquest. In the XVIII century, the city became the center of fishing, shipbuilding and mining of minerals (alum and gagata), as a result of which it began to develop rapidly.
