Bang Pa-In is the summer residence of the kings of Thailand, a favorite holiday destination for residents of the capital. It is located on the natural island of Chao Phrai, 60 km north of Bangkok. The Ayutthai kings chose Bang Pa-In for their summer residence. At first, the mother of the future king Prasat Thong lived here, so the future monarch was born here. Nowadays, Bang Pa-In Palace and its surrounding beautiful park are open to the public. Having ascended the throne in 1629, Prasat Thong ordered the construction of a Buddhist temple Chumphon Nikayaram. He enlarged the small lake, increasing its area to 1.6 square kilometers, and built a small palace on the shore, in which he and his descendants later spent the summer months. When the more distant Thonburi (now Bang Kok) became the capital under King Thaksin, Bang Pa-in fell into decline. Later it was again from the wings of King Mongkut. By this time, steamboats were already sailing along Chao Phraya, so that distance ceased to be an obstacle. Mongkut built a new palace on the site of the former, and his descendants expanded and improved the building. Bang Pa-In served all the kings of Thailand except Rama VIII, who chose Hua Hin as his summer residence. However, King Bhumibol willingly uses the palace for state receptions. Most of the buildings in the beautifully manicured park, among the many ponds with water lilies, date back to the reign of King Chula Longkorn.Solid areas: 33%
