The garden was founded by Portuguese Prince Regent João in 1808. Originally created to acclimatize various spices brought from the West Indies. The Botanical Garden has unique historical, architectural and artistic values, the most complete botanical library, the largest herbarium in Brazil. It has been under UNESCO protection since 1992.
