Verdon Gorge is the most picturesque place in the Alps of Upper Provence, as well as the deepest canyon in Europe. The canyon is located in the southeastern part of France between the towns of Castellan and Moutier-Saint-Marie. Verdon Gorge was formed on the Verdon River of the same name, and is located about 50 km from the French coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The river got its name due to the striking turquoise-green color of the water and originates high in the Alps. The most stunning part of the Verdon Gorge lies between the cities of Castellan and Moustier-Saint-Marie, where the river carved into the limestone rock canyon more than 700 meters deep. At the end of the gorge, the Verdon River flows into an artificial lake, which was named Saint-Croix du VerdonSolid areas: 1%
