The fortress in Malbork is one of the largest surviving groups of Gothic architecture in the world. Construction of the fortress began in 1278. The original name of the castle used by the Teutonic Order was Marienburg. In 1309-1457 the castle was the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. In later years, until 1772, the castle became one of the residences of the Polish kings, and then it became part of Prussian hands. In the late 1950s, it was decided to restore the castle, and in 1997 the building was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.Solid areas: 1%
